dMAT Exam Germany: Guide for Indian Master’s Applicants 2027

Updated on 29 Sept 20268 min read

TL;DR

  • The dMAT is a new academic aptitude test for selected Indian Master’s applicants to Germany from the Summer Semester 2027 intake.
  • It is part of the APS India documentation process, but it does not replace APS, university admission rules, anabin checks, or the visa process.
  • The first APS India dMAT test is scheduled for 26 September 2026, with certificates expected on 12 October 2026.
  • If dMAT applies to you, start your APS documents early. You can submit the dMAT certificate later, but you cannot use it to add missing academic documents.
  • As of 25 July 2026, there are no real test-taker experiences, proven score cut-offs, or reliable coaching success claims yet.

Do you need dMAT?

You may need the Digital Master Test, usually called dMAT, if all of these apply:

  • You apply through APS India for a Master’s course in Germany
  • Your previous degree is in engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management
  • You apply for the Summer Semester 2027 intake or a later intake
  • You are not covered by the transition rules for earlier APS registration or document shipment
Heads up

Do not decide only from broad labels like B.Tech, IT, AI or Management. APS looks at the title on your degree certificate, transcript, marksheets, branch, major or specialisation.

The requirement currently does not apply to Bachelor’s applicants, PhD applicants, applicants from unaffected disciplines, or students in officially confirmed exchange, double-degree or university-partnership courses.

What dMAT is

The dMAT is a standardised, computer-based academic aptitude test administered by g.a.s.t., the organisation connected with the TestDaF Institute.

For selected Indian Master’s applicants, it becomes an additional part of APS documentation. It does not replace:

  • APS document verification
  • your grades
  • anabin recognition
  • university admission requirements
  • your student visa process
Good to know

APS India usually calls it the Digital Master Test. Some official preparation material expands it as Digital Master Assessment Test. Both refer to the same test.

Dates and fee

For the first APS India dMAT cycle:

EventDate
Registration opened29 June 2026
Registration deadline15 September 2026
Test date26 September 2026
Certificate available12 October 2026
Current fee€150

Test centres are planned in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune. The final available centres appear during registration, and places are allocated first come, first served.

Pro tip

Check your institution and degree in anabin before paying for dMAT. A strong dMAT result cannot fix an unrecognised institution or a formally insufficient qualification.

APS timing

You should not wait until the October dMAT result before starting APS.

APS India says the remaining APS documents can be submitted earlier, so verification can begin. The dMAT certificate can follow later.

But there is an important limit: all other academic qualification documents must already be included in your original APS submission. You cannot use the later dMAT certificate submission to add missing marksheets or qualifications.

Test structure

The exam has about three hours of testing plus a 30-minute break. It has two main parts:

ModuleTimeWhat it tests
Core Module90 minutesAbstract reasoning, mental arithmetic and logic
General Academic Module90 minutesAcademic reasoning using texts, diagrams, tables and formulas

Indian APS candidates take the common General Academic Module. They do not take a degree-specific subject test in electronics, mechanical engineering, finance or management.

Heads up

The dMAT platform also offers specialised modules for individual university courses, for example at RWTH Aachen or Göttingen. Do not confuse those with the APS India dMAT requirement.

Core Module

The Core Module includes three timed task types:

SubtestTaskOfficial time
Figure SequencesContinue visual matrix sequences20 series in 25 minutes
Mathematical EquationsSolve linked systems of equations20 systems in 25 minutes
Latin SquaresComplete 5×5 letter grids20 tasks in 25 minutes

The challenge is speed. You have roughly 75 seconds per task. The questions are not mainly about advanced knowledge. They test whether you can recognise patterns, hold information in your head and work accurately without external aids.

General Academic Module

In the General Academic Module, you receive academic input material and answer questions about it. The material may include text, diagrams, tables and formulas.

Possible areas include mathematics, computational sciences, natural sciences, engineering, business administration, economics, social sciences and humanities.

This does not mean there is a fixed syllabus to memorise. The official examples are about applying information given in the question. You need to understand the material, identify assumptions and use the information correctly.

Scoring

The dMAT certificate reports:

  • a percentile rank
  • a dMAT score for the Core Module
  • a dMAT score for the subject module
  • a combined total score

Each module score is scaled from 0 to 200, with 100 as the mean. A percentile rank of 70 means that 70% of participants scored the same or lower, and 30% scored higher.

There is currently no reliable answer to “What score is good?” APS has not published a pass mark, and universities decide independently whether and how to use dMAT results.

Important

Be careful with claims like “120 is safe” or “150 is required.” As of 25 July 2026, there are no Indian test-taker results, university cut-offs or verified score distributions.

How to prepare

Start with the official preparation material. Then practise under real test conditions: no paper, no calculator, no phone and no watch.

For the Core Module, practise:

  • figure patterns with a fixed scan order
  • mental substitution and elimination for equations
  • Latin square exclusion by row and column
  • working fast without writing intermediate steps

For the General Academic Module, practise:

  • extracting definitions from unfamiliar text
  • translating prose into formulas or relationships
  • reading tables and diagrams
  • identifying what follows from the supplied material
  • working with technical English under time pressure

A simple preparation plan:

  • Read the official dMAT guide and watch official interface videos
  • Try an untimed diagnostic without notes
  • Drill the three Core Module formats separately
  • Practise short academic passages from different fields
  • Run full 90-minute simulations without paper, calculator or pauses
  • Review mistakes by cause: misreading, memory overload, calculation error or time pressure

Test-day rules

Train with the real restrictions in mind. During the test, candidates may not use:

  • paper or notes
  • calculator
  • phone, tablet or electronic device
  • wristwatch, smartwatch or fitness watch
  • reference material during the test or break

Only the identity document may remain on the desk. The identity document must match the one used for registration. Late arrival after examination materials have been distributed can lead to non-admission.

Coaching claims

Because the first APS India dMAT has not yet taken place, no coaching provider can honestly claim proven results from the Indian test.

A useful course should offer realistic timed practice, no-note and no-calculator conditions, correct Core Module formats, input-based academic passages and a clear distinction between official information and speculation.

Be sceptical of claims about real previous papers, guaranteed scores, known cut-offs or proven admission outcomes.

What is still unknown

Some important details are still unresolved:

  • the number of General Academic Module questions
  • exact raw-score conversion
  • first Indian cohort score distribution
  • explicit negative-marking policy
  • future Indian test dates after September 2026
  • university-specific cut-offs or weighting
  • treatment of multiple attempts
  • whether affected degree categories will expand

This is why you should check the official APS India and dMAT pages before registering.

What to do next

If dMAT may apply to you, your next steps are:

  1. Check whether your degree category is affected.
  2. Check your university and degree status in anabin.
  3. Start your APS document preparation early.
  4. Register for dMAT only after checking the official requirements.
  5. Prepare under realistic no-note and no-calculator conditions.

FAQ

Is dMAT required for all Indian students?

No. It currently applies only to selected Indian Master’s applicants, mainly from engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business and management backgrounds, for Summer Semester 2027 or later.

Does dMAT replace APS?

No. dMAT is an additional element in the APS documentation process. APS verification, university admission rules, anabin checks and visa steps still matter.

Is there a dMAT pass mark?

APS has not published a clear pass mark. A low score does not automatically mean APS refusal, but the score appears on the certificate and universities may decide how to use it.

Do I take a subject-specific test for my degree?

For the APS India requirement, candidates take the General Academic Module. This is not a separate degree-specific test in engineering, economics, finance or management.

Can I prepare for the General Academic Module?

Yes. You cannot memorise a fixed syllabus, but you can practise academic reading, table interpretation, formula use, reasoning from supplied information and technical English.

Should I wait for my dMAT result before submitting APS documents?

No. APS India allows other APS documents to be submitted earlier. The dMAT certificate can follow later, but all other academic documents must already be in the original APS submission.

Are coaching centres useful?

They may be useful if they offer realistic timed practice under official restrictions. Be careful with claims about previous papers, guaranteed scores or known cut-offs before the first Indian test has happened.
