["Mathematics in Kassel is mainlyapplication and computer oriented. The Institute of Mathematics specialises inanalysis,computer algebra,optimisation,discrete mathematics,stochasticsandnumerics, and our students choose the majority of their courses from these fields. Typical subjects are functional analysis and partial differential equations, variational calculus and mathematical physics, computational commutative or differential algebra, cryptography and coding theory, discrete optimisation, discrete mathematics and combinatorics, numerical analysis of ordinary or partial differential equations, stochastic modelling and simulation or stochastic processes.Besides mathematics, all students must choose a minor subject which can bephysics,computer science,nanoscienceoreconomics. About one-fifth of the courses will be from this minor subject, which encourages interdisciplinarity among our students. The possible courses usually cover topics for which mathematical methods are relevant.Studying mathematics in Kassel is characterised by great freedom: there are no compulsory mathematics courses — instead, students can freely choose each semester among the offered Master's courses and seminars. Six months are dedicated to writing a Master's thesis on the results of astudent research project.
