Anthropological Studies in Culture and History

["Empirical cultural studies focus on contemporary, “modern” societies and examine how social realities and worlds of experience are culturally constructed and historically developed. With a focus on cultural and social spaces as well as media and technology in everyday life, the courses offered to students are dedicated to central topics of social and cultural analysis.The excellent supervisory relationship and the close exchange between lecturers and students also characterise the programme beyond the lectures – there are many opportunities for exchange, to orientate oneself professionally and to help shape everyday life at the institute.The courses offered by the institute provide a basic, general and topic-specific in-depth knowledge of cultural analysis. At the beginning of the study programme, the focus is on methods and perspectives of empirical ethnographic research and cultural theories. Building on this, current fields of research, innovative methods and more complex theories are addressed in courses. Students can also gain insights into other subject areas as part of the interdisciplinary curricular area “Studium Generale” at Universität Hamburg.There is also the option of acquiring an additional qualification in museum management.The central element of the Master's degree programme in Anthropological Studies in Culture and History is the practice of methodological approaches and their connection with theoretical perspectives of empirical cultural analysis.
